How to Change Canvas Size in Photoshop, CSP, Procreate and More

Quick answer: To change canvas size in most art programs, open the canvas size command, enter the new width and height, pick an anchor point and confirm. In Photoshop it is Image > Canvas Size (Alt+Ctrl+C on Windows, Option+Cmd+C on Mac). In Clip Studio Paint it is Edit > Change Canvas Size. In Procreate, tap Actions > Canvas > Crop & Resize. Changing canvas size adds or removes space around your artwork without scaling it; to make the artwork itself bigger or smaller, use image size or resolution instead.

Knowing how to change canvas size is one of those small skills that saves a lot of frustration in digital painting. You might need more room for a background, want to crop a sketch tighter, or realize halfway through that a piece should be a different shape for printing or social media. Every major app can do it, but each puts the command in a different place and handles anchors and resampling a little differently.

This guide covers the difference between canvas size and image size, then gives step-by-step instructions for Photoshop, Clip Studio Paint, Procreate, Krita and GIMP, followed by tips for avoiding blurry results. If you are still deciding what dimensions to start with, our guide to the best canvas size for digital art in Clip Studio Paint covers recommended pixel sizes and resolutions for print and screen.

Canvas Size vs Image Size: Know Which You Need

These two commands sound similar but do different things.

If your goal is “I need more room on the right to finish the background,” you want canvas size. If your goal is “This file is too small to print at 11×14,” you want image size, and you should understand the quality trade-offs covered later.

How to Change Canvas Size in Photoshop

  1. Open your document and go to Image > Canvas Size. The canvas size shortcut in Photoshop is Alt+Ctrl+C on Windows or Option+Cmd+C on Mac.
  2. Choose units from the dropdown: pixels for screen work, inches or centimeters for print.
  3. Enter new width and height values. To add a fixed amount, tick Relative and type only the extra space you want, for example 500 pixels.
  4. Click a square in the Anchor grid. The artwork stays pinned to that point and new space is added on the opposite sides. The center square adds space evenly on all sides.
  5. Choose a Canvas extension color for the new area, such as background color, white or transparent (transparent is used when there is no locked background layer).
  6. Click OK.

Entering smaller values crops the canvas. Photoshop will warn you that some content will be clipped. Pixels outside the new canvas on regular layers can still be recovered by moving the layer, unless the document is flattened or you crop with “Delete Cropped Pixels” turned on in the Crop tool.

Faster option: the Crop tool

Press C for the Crop tool and drag the handles outward beyond the image to enlarge the canvas, or inward to crop. Press Enter to commit. This is handy when you want to resize visually rather than type numbers.

Fit canvas to content

If artwork extends past the edges, Image > Reveal All expands the canvas to include all layer content.

Canvas Size in CSP (Clip Studio Paint)

  1. Go to Edit > Change Canvas Size.
  2. In the dialog, enter the new width and height, or drag the edges of the preview frame directly on the canvas.
  3. Set the Reference point (anchor) to control where new space is added.
  4. Check the unit setting (px, mm, cm, in) to avoid confusion between print and screen measurements.
  5. Click OK.

Clip Studio Paint keeps layer content outside the new boundary unless you explicitly crop it, so shrinking the canvas is reversible as long as you have not merged or deleted layers.

Change image resolution in Clip Studio Paint

To scale the entire illustration, use Edit > Change Image Resolution. You can change pixel dimensions, the resolution value or both, and choose an interpolation method. For line art, a sharper interpolation option preserves edges better; smoother options suit painted work.

Crop to a selection

Make a rectangular selection and choose Edit > Crop to trim the canvas to that area. This is a quick way to tighten a composition.

Comic and manga pages

For multi-page comics, page settings such as bleed and safe areas are configured when the file is created and can be adjusted through the page or story settings. If you are building manga pages, our walkthrough on digital manga art in Clip Studio explains page setup in more detail.

How to Change Canvas Size in Procreate

  1. Tap the Actions menu (wrench icon).
  2. Tap Canvas, then Crop & Resize.
  3. Drag the edges of the grid outward to enlarge or inward to crop. For exact numbers, tap Settings and type width and height.
  4. Toggle Resample Canvas off if you want to change the canvas boundaries without scaling the artwork. Turn it on if you want the artwork to scale with the canvas.
  5. Tap Done.

Procreate limits the number of layers based on canvas size and your device’s memory. Enlarging a canvas can reduce the maximum layer count, and if your existing layers exceed the new limit, Procreate may not allow the change. Merging some layers first can help.

How to Change Canvas Size in Krita

  1. Go to Image > Resize Canvas (shortcut Ctrl+Alt+C).
  2. Enter the new width and height, with or without the constrain proportions link.
  3. Choose an anchor point from the grid.
  4. Click OK.

To scale the whole image, use Image > Scale Image to New Size instead. Krita also lets you trim the canvas to the current selection or to a layer’s content from the Image menu.

How to Change Canvas Size in GIMP

  1. Go to Image > Canvas Size.
  2. Unlink the chain icon if you want to change width and height independently.
  3. Set the offset to position the image within the new canvas, or click Center.
  4. Under Resize layers, choose whether to resize all layers to match the new canvas. If you leave layers unchanged, new areas may appear transparent.
  5. Click Resize.

GIMP’s Image > Fit Canvas to Layers expands the canvas to include all layer content, similar to Reveal All in Photoshop.

How to Increase Canvas Size Without Losing Quality

Increasing canvas size never reduces quality, because no existing pixels are changed. The concern is increasing image size, where software has to invent new pixels.

  • Enlarge canvas, then paint into the new space. This is lossless. Your existing work stays sharp and you fill the new area by hand.
  • Upscale only modestly. Doubling resolution is usually tolerable for painted work; larger jumps produce visible softness.
  • Use the right interpolation. Smoother methods suit paintings; sharper or nearest-neighbor methods suit pixel art and crisp line art.
  • Re-ink after upscaling. If line art becomes soft, many artists redraw key lines on a new layer at the higher resolution.
  • Start large next time. Working at your final print resolution from the start avoids upscaling altogether.

Common Reasons to Change Canvas Size

Adding bleed for print

Printers usually require extra image area beyond the trim line so there are no white edges after cutting. A common bleed is 1/8 inch (about 3 mm) on each side. Enlarge the canvas by twice the bleed in each dimension with a center anchor, then extend the background into the new area.

Changing aspect ratio for social media

A square post, a 4:5 portrait post and a 9:16 story all need different shapes. Duplicate the file, then use canvas size to add or trim space for each format so the original stays intact.

Making room for text or a frame

Add space at the bottom of an illustration for a title or signature, or add even margins for a border.

Fixing a cramped composition

If a character’s head is touching the top edge, enlarging the canvas upward and extending the background can give the composition breathing room.

Pixel Math for Print Sizes

When resizing for print, it helps to know how pixels translate into inches. Multiply the print size in inches by the DPI to get the pixel dimensions you need.

Print sizeAt 300 DPIAt 150 DPI
5×7 in1500 x 2100 px750 x 1050 px
8×10 in2400 x 3000 px1200 x 1500 px
11×14 in3300 x 4200 px1650 x 2100 px
A4 (8.27 x 11.69 in)About 2480 x 3508 pxAbout 1240 x 1754 px

If your file is smaller than these numbers, you can either print at a smaller size or upscale with care. If it is close, enlarging the canvas and painting extra background is often a better fix than stretching the whole image.

A Safe Workflow for Any Resize

  1. Save a copy first. Use “Save As” with a new name so the original stays untouched.
  2. Unlock or convert the background layer if you want the new area to be transparent.
  3. Decide canvas or image. More space means canvas size; bigger artwork means image size.
  4. Pick the anchor based on where the new space should go.
  5. Zoom to 100 percent afterward and inspect edges and line quality before continuing to paint.

Troubleshooting

The new area is transparent or the wrong color

The background layer may not be locked, or the extension color was set to transparent. Fill the new area on a separate layer, or set the extension color before resizing.

My artwork got stretched

You likely used image size or resampling instead of canvas size. Undo and use the canvas size command, or turn off resampling in Procreate.

The file became very large

Big canvases at 300–600 DPI with many layers take up a lot of memory. Merge finished layers, delete unused ones and save in the app’s native format.

Canvas size will not change in Procreate

Your layer count may exceed the limit for the larger size. Merge layers or reduce the requested dimensions.

FAQs

What is the canvas size shortcut in Photoshop?

Alt+Ctrl+C on Windows and Option+Cmd+C on Mac open the Canvas Size dialog.

How do I increase canvas size without stretching my drawing?

Use the canvas size command rather than image size, choose an anchor point, and enter larger dimensions. Existing artwork stays exactly the same size.

Where is canvas size in CSP?

In Clip Studio Paint, go to Edit > Change Canvas Size. To scale the whole image instead, use Edit > Change Image Resolution.

Can I change canvas size after I finish a drawing?

Yes. Canvas size can be changed at any time. If you shrink it, content outside the boundary may be hidden or cropped depending on the app.

Does changing canvas size affect DPI?

No. Canvas size changes the pixel dimensions of the workspace but not the resolution setting. DPI is changed through image size or resolution commands.

What is the difference between crop and canvas size?

Crop trims the canvas visually to a selected area. Canvas size lets you enter exact dimensions and can enlarge as well as shrink.

Next Step

Changing canvas size is safe and reversible as long as you use the canvas command, pick a sensible anchor, and save scaling for the image size tools. The best fix, though, is starting with the right dimensions so you rarely need to resize.
